PTSA Sponsored After-School Clubs

RCMS PTSA sponsors a number of after-school clubs for Clemente students. While these clubs are fee-based, need based scholarships are available for interested students directly from the vendors. Parents are responsible for prompt pickup of their students after the clubs as well as for providing transportation.

1.    Advanced Debate (Vendor– Fairfax Collegiate) 

a.    Day – Monday

b.    Description - This course is based on the Middle School Public Debate Program (http://www.middleschooldebate.com).Students engage in debates which involve a wide variety of issues of public concern at the local, state, national, and global levels, as well as topics that are of direct relevance to students.

2.   Beginning Debate (Vendor – Fairfax Collegiate)

a.    Day – Tuesday

b.    Description - This course is based on the Middle School Public Debate Program (http://www.middleschooldebate.com). Beginning Debate students learn about different debate formats and effective public speaking strategies. They engage in debates which involve a wide variety of issues of public concern at the local, state, national, and global levels, as well as topics that are of direct relevance to students.

3.   Math Club (Vendor – Yang Academy)

a.    Day – Wednesday

b.    Description Students get familiar with the curriculum of various Math competitions, and gain content mastery by practice in the classroom.

5.    Debate Tournament League Club (Parent contact – Smitha Menon and Beena Tomy)

a.    Day – Wednesday

b.    Description –  This is a parent volunteers organized and funded club that prepares interested students and facilitates their participation in the National Capital Debate League, where these students compete against other teams from the DMV area.

6.   Stock Market Club (Vendor -Sparks Academy)

a.    Day – Thursday

b.    Description - Returning and new students learn about current investment topics, from IPOs and mergers to stock splits and bitcoin!  Students participate in a team competition against other area schools to build the best $100,000 stock portfolio using a simulation tool with real-time market data, “learning by doing.”

7.   Model UN (Vendor – Fairfax Collegiate)

a.    Day – Thursday

b.    Description - Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the U.N. Security Council and work together to avert military confrontations and resolve international disputes. Students develop critical thinking, negotiating, public speaking, debating, and writing skills.

8.   Chess Club (Vendor – SKE)

a.    Day- Friday

b.    Description - Chess clubs split time between lesson and play. Lessons range from learning the rules to advanced tournament strategies, depending on the children. State and national champions have come from our programs, but most of our students are just looking to have fun! Play time is structured to pair each student against an opponent of similar skill.

9.   Chess Tournament Training (Vendor – SKE)

a.    Description - In Tournament Training, every week students play a game against a player close to their skill level.  The game is then analyzed in a group setting with a highly-rated chess coach and peers.  It's a great next step for students who really love chess club!  Beginning tournament players learn how to take chess notation, play with a clock, and the value of game analysis. Intermediate and advanced players get serious games against tough opposition and analysis from high-level coaches. You do not have to be in chess club to be in the chess tournament training club and vice versa.
