PTSA Sponsored After-School Clubs

RCMS PTSA sponsors a number of after-school clubs for Clemente students. While these clubs are fee-based, need based scholarships are available for interested students directly from the vendors. Parents are responsible for prompt pickup of their students after the clubs as well as for providing transportation.

Day - Monday

Name – Beginning Debate (Vendor – Fairfax Collegiate)

Description - This course is based on the Middle School Public Debate Program (http://www.middleschooldebate.com). Beginning Debate students learn about different debate formats and effective public speaking strategies. They engage in debates which involve a wide variety of issues of public concern at the local, state, national, and global levels, as well as topics that are of direct relevance to students.

Day - Tuesday

Name – Advanced Debate (Vendor – Fairfax Collegiate)

Description - This course is based on the Middle School Public Debate Program (http://www.middleschooldebate.com). Students engage in debates which involve a wide variety of issues of public concern at the local, state, national, and global levels, as well as topics that are of direct relevance to students.

Day - Wednesday

Name – Math Club (Vendor – Yang Academy)

Description Students get familiar with the curriculum of various Math competitions, and gain content mastery by practice in the classroom.  Students are free to withdraw with prorated refund if they get selected in the RCMS Math team. With enough enrollments classes will be differentiated between 6th grade and 7th/8th grade students.

Name – Yoga (Shining Kids Yoga)

Description - The Yoga for Middle School class focuses on giving pre-teens and teens tools they can use to reduce stress in their lives, promote positive body image, and increase strength and flexibility. Each class will include a series of yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation practices. Classes will include discussions on how to apply what they learn in yoga class to help them at home, school, and with friends. Each class ends with a period of relaxation and aromatherapy. Students should bring their own yoga mat to class. Parents are responsible for transportation and prompt pick-up after yoga class ends

Name – Web Design

Description - Students learn HTML5 and create their own web pages. Topics include the structure of a web page, HTML tags, HTML attributes, hyper-links, CSS styles, and HTML5 elements and attributes. Students use digital cameras, Paint.NET, and GIMP to create images for the web. No previous coding skills are required.

Day - Thursday

Name – Stock Market Club (Sparks Academy)

Description Come and learn about how investors make (and lose) money in the stock market and how you can start investing successfully at a young age! Students use a cool stock-trading simulation to build a $10,000 stock portfolio with real-time market data, “learning by doing.”   Stocks and bonds, Asset allocation,  Interpreting stock price graphs,  Risk, return and diversification, The SNAP IPO, Mutual funds and stock indices, Options (calls, puts) and shorting.

Name – Model UN

Description - Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the U.N. Security Council and work together to avert military confrontations and resolve international disputes. Students develop critical thinking, negotiating, public speaking, debating, and writing skills.

Name – Chess Club

Description - Chess clubs split time between lesson and play. Lessons range from learning the rules to advanced tournament strategies, depending on the children. State and national champions have come from our programs, but most of our students are just looking to have fun! Play time is structured to pair each student against an opponent of similar skill.

Day - Friday

Name – Chess Tournament Training

Description - In Tournament Training, every week students play a game against a player close to their skill level.  The game is then analyzed in a group setting with a highly-rated chess coach and peers.  It's a great next step for students who really love chess club!  Beginning tournament players learn how to take chess notation, play with a clock, and the value of game analysis. Intermediate and advanced players get serious games against tough opposition and analysis from high-level coaches. You do not have to be in chess club to be in the chess tournament training club and vice versa.
