What is the PTSA?

The Parent-Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a group of parents, teachers, administrators, and community members who want to provide our children with an exceptional education. We are part of the larger organizational PTA branches, including the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (MCCPTA), Maryland PTA, and the National PTA. In fact, a portion of your membership dues goes to support these larger organizations.

Our Mission

To make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering RCMS families and communities to advocate for the needs of all RCMS students.

Our Vision

To be a self-sustaining organization capable of providing the resources needed to help Roberto Clemente Middle School students, staff, and families achieve their academic, social, and cultural goals.

What do we do?

We support the school by providing our students and teachers with programs, resources, and assistance that enrich our children’s overall educational experience. Studies show that parental involvement plays a significant role in student achievement and performance. A strong parent group can make a tremendous difference in how a school functions. At Roberto Clemente, we encourage all our families to join the Roberto Clemente Middle School PTSA. It is a wonderful way to get to know the other great families in our school community. In addition, it serves as a vehicle for you to voice your opinion on important issues affecting your child’s learning environment at the local, state, and national levels. The role of the PTSA is to:

  1. Encourage membership and participation by all families, teachers, students and other interested community members
  2. Provide timely communications throughout the school community
  3. Recruit and retain volunteers to support the academic and programmatic activities
  4. Support the standard school curriculum, and assist in the implementation of the International Baccalaureate and Dual Language programs
  5. Raise funding support for:
    • Cultural Arts Assemblies
    • Book Fairs
    • Family friendly events
    • Staff Appreciation activities
    • Student activities
    • Classroom supplies, curriculum materials and supplies for extracurricular activities
    • Facility, childcare, and janitorial expenses for PTSA meetings
    • Insurance and Financial Reporting
  6. Advocate for MCPS support of RCMS related needs
  7. Promote/publicize school sponsored events
  8. Encourage and support community service activities

Why join?

Every parent has the opportunity for an active voice and interest in their child’s education. The PTSA can be a powerful tool in communicating with school administrators and teachers. It is a crucial link to providing our children with an exceptional educational experience throughout their childhood. The PTSA helps you to:

  • CONNECT with the teachers and administrators.
  • ENRICH our children’s education.
  • NETWORK with other parents, community members, and other schools.
  • SPEAK on behalf of your child.
  • INFLUENCE change within the school.

For students, participation in PTSA activities (including attendance of General Membership meetings) can be recorded as Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. Student membership also enables our students to grow socially through community outreach activities.

However, the PTSA is limited by the funds that we have available. In order to better support our students and teachers, it is extremely important that we raise money for staff support, programs, and special events. Our children deserve to have the same experience as children at any neighboring school. The PTSA will strive to get our students the school experience they deserve by making their experience not only a learning one, but also one that is fun along the way. By donating, joining, or volunteering, you are making a difference in your child’s future. Please join us today!

When do we meet?

Every parent has the opportunity for an active voice and interest in their child’s education. The RCMS PTSA General Membership meetings take place four or five times a year. The meetings will cover the PTSA business agenda, a report by the Principal and then often will feature programs and speakers on topics of interest to RCMS families.  Twice a year, the administration gives a "State of the School” presentation updating our families on the current progress of the school and students as a whole.  "State of the School” presentations will be held in conjunction with our General Membership meetings. Please plan to attend. All meetings are held at 7 PM in the RCMS Media Center.
